Hyderabad: The newly-formed Congress government in Telangana state has issued orders offering a heavy discount on pending traffic challans across the state, in fulfillment of one of its election-time promises.

Motorists who have pending challans against their vehicles can clear them as a one-time settlement from December 26 to January 10.

The government waived 80 per cent of the challan amount for two-wheelers and three-wheelers (autorickshaws). The discount in case of cars and other light motor vehicles, trucks and heavy motor vehicles was 60 per cent, according to a government order issued on Tuesday.

The government offered a 90 per cent discount in respect of push carts. The same discount is offered for TSRTC buses.

The Congress, in its election manifesto, had promised to offer a discount on traffic challans to provide relief to vehicle owners.

People have been advised to visit Telangana traffic e-challan website, check pending challan against their vehicles and pay the discounted amount online. It is estimated that about two crore traffic challans are pending across the state.

To avail of this benefit, motorists have to log on to the Telangana traffic-integrated e-challan portal and enter the vehicle details. The site will display all the challans pending against the vehicle.

Users will have click the payment button which will redirect them to the payment portal which will display the rebated amount.

The sum total of pending traffic challans will be displayed as usual and depending on the kind and model of vehicle, the discount amount will be available.

However, the e-challan portal crashed on Day-1 on Tuesday due to heavy rush. The portal developed technical glitches with a large number of people attempting to clear pending challans at a time.

People complained of not being able to open the portal. Officials urged people not to rush to pay challans at once as the facility will be available till January 10.
