HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Friday observed that lower level officers in the police department need to be sensitised about the fact that third degree is not required during investigation.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji, made these observations while dealing with a suo motu taken up writ petition on the custodial death incident of autorickshaw driver Chiranjeevi A., at the Tukaram Gate police station on Tuesday night.

The court issued notices to the principal secretary (home), DGP, Hyderabad police commissioner, DCP (north zone), ACP Gopalapuram and SHO Tukaram gate asking them to respond to the notices by June 5.

Advocate General B.S. Prasad tried to submit to the court that the deceased was a repeated offender and six cases have been registered against him. The Chief Justice said “that is immaterial. He died while in police custody, which is unacceptable”.
