Calicut University plans tree-planting drive

Over 5,000 saplings will be planted

KOZHIKODE: Nature conservation has gained momentum in the district with the MLAs planting saplings  equal to their margin of majorities and the Calicut University planning a tree-planting drive on its campus from June 6 to 30. It will launch a campaign ‘One Person, One Tree’ in which all stakeholders in the varsity, including employees, teachers and students will plant one tree each and preserve it.

The affiliated colleges will also be directed to launch similar campaigns. Over 5,000 saplings will be planted which will include all kinds of trees, including herbal saplings, distributed  through the social forestry department and Kottakkal Aryavaidya Sala Herbal Garden.

Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Dr K. Mohammed Basheer said that actor Sreenivasan will inaugurate the campaign on June 6. “The university will work for the welfare of society and create awareness about nature conservation through this campaign,” he added. The university has already called the meeting of employees twice to discuss the plans.

The authorities have identified the areas to plant the saplings. “The estate officer and his team have completed over 1,000 pits for the project. We will assign identified areas to each department and take up follow-up steps,” he added.
