Kozhikode Schools to form WatSan Clubs
Clubs to check water quality, ensure clean surroundings in schools
KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, in association with various students' voluntary organisations, will form Water-Sanitation Clubs (WatSan Clubs) in city schools under the general education department in October. The clubs will check the water quality and ensure clean surroundings in the respective schools and nearby areas. The corporation will rope in the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) to train the students in this regard.
The clubs will consists of members from NSS, NCC, Scouts & Guides and Student Police Cadets and take part in the awareness campaigns of the corporation on waste management. "We are planning to launch clubs as part of students' learning activities which will help them involve in the practical aspects of health education," said Mr M. Radhakrishnan Master, chairman of the corporation education standing committee. Ahead of its implementation, the corporation will call a meeting of various voluntary organisations.
Dr P.S. Harikumar, head of the CWRDM water quality division, said that his organisation would provide technical support to the project. "Earlier, the state government had a plan to establish laboratories in all schools to check the water quality and conduct other related experiments. “We had also given a detailed proposal in that regard. However, the project didn't progress further. The civic body's efforts to involve students in the water sanitation campaign will be more effective than roping in elders," he added.
