Hyderabad: The months of October, November and December mark a seasonal peak period for pubs, bars and wine shops as they register the year’s maximum sales in these three months. However, they have nothing to cheer for this year as the footfall of party regulars has taken a beating this month because of the election code that is in force in the state.

Every pub and bar in Hyderabad, perceived as the hash-tag destination, comes alive to renditions by nationally popular music bands as youngsters dance away to glory adding to the excitement, courtesy international cocktail mixers.

The owners claim that a bigger spoilsport this year is the frequent checking by police, which is compelling them to close early, while their patrons lament the frequent checking of vehicles.

Mamadi Kishan, general manager for Air Live, said, “There has been a drop in turnout ever since the election code has come into effect. Police officials have directed every management to abide by the rules and guidelines till elections.”

He added, “Bands from across the country perform during the weekends, including Bollywood singer Pranav Chandran. Despite the higher costs that are involved, we have packed all seven days in the week with a variety of musical programmes only to bring the customers back.”

Akhil from House of Spirits in Gachibowli said, “Our’s is one of the biggest wine stores in Telangana. Customers from the IT corridor frequent our place but even their numbers have slumped because of the election code. We have missed out on bulk orders from marriages and functions. Added to that, the authorities are asking us to send everyday sales reports.”

Suman Mukta, a frequent party goer, said “The election code, the frequent checking and our cars being stopped at different junctions and even by-lanes is too embarrassing. Many of our friends have decided to avoid these pitfalls and stay at home and catch up on the cricket World Cup proceedings.”
