Ship model making facility at Cochin University of Science and Technology now
The project is the corporate social responsibility initiative of the CSL in Cusat with an assistance of Rs 25 lakh.
KOCHI: Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) is set to have a ship model making facility that will enhance the quality of practical learning of ship and boat building which will enable the BTech students to understand more about the complex hull shapes. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) director-technical Sunny Thomas will inaugurate the unit under 'CSL Assisted Department Facility Upgradation in Model-Making Shop (CADFUMS)' project at 9.30 am on Tuesday at the Cusat's department of ship technology. Dr Vice-chancellor J. Letha will be the chief guest. The project is the corporate social responsibility initiative of the CSL in Cusat with an assistance of Rs 25 lakh. Ship model making is part of BTech ship technology.
"Small wooden ship models scaled to a size of one meter can be made using this facility, initially assisting the UG BTech students to learn more about lab-oriented practical ship design and construction. Later with the help of experienced model making instructor, skilful students can make more attractive and value-added models manufactured in CSL," said Dr K. Sivaprasad, associate professor, department of ship technology. "These are also offered space to be exhibited in the CSL. Further to this, with the help of additional infrastructure like numerically controlled multi-dimensional shape-cutting machine, precision ship models, scaled exactly to suit the requirement of tests and research work, can also be made here."
