Yashoda Hospitals gets organ transplant award
This has brought Telangana state to the number one position in the country in terms of cadaver organ donations.
Hyderabad: The Yashoda Group of Hospitals has been recognised as the Best Hospital for Organ Donation by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, for both living and cadaver donations. This has brought Telangana state to the number one position in the country in terms of cadaver organ donations.
414 cadaver donations have been carried out under the state government’s Jeevandan Scheme, of which a majority have been generated fro-m organs retrieved by the Yashoda Hospitals.
G. Ravinder Rao, the Chairman of the Yashoda Group, received the award in New Delhi on Monday. He said, “We have worked towards increasing awareness about organ donation and are happy that the government has recognised our decadelong efforts.”
Organ transplants assist those suffering from chronic organ ailments and give them a new lease on life. The Yashoda Group is assisting the government in the implementation of its organ donation program by not only retrieving healthy organs from patients who are declared brain-dead but also transplanting them in patients who are in need of them.
Organ transplantations began to be carried out at the hospital a decade ago. Since then livers, kidneys, hearts and lungs have been successfully transplanted. Ever since the implementation of the Jeevandan Scheme, cadaver organ transplants have gained importance.
A special team of organ transplant surgeons has been assembled by the hospital group for this purpose.
Dr G. Swarnalatha, the Chief Executive Officer of Jeevandan, says, “We have an online registration system for organ donation. Along with the hospitals, the Jeevandan office also maintains a list of patients who require organs. Once organs are available, the retrieving hospital is allowed to keep one organ, and the rest are allotted to other hospitals. Private and government hospitals receive their share of organs on a rotational basis.”
