HYDERABAD: Former PCC presidents V. Hanumantha Rao and Ponnala Lakshmaiah recalled the services of educationist and social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on his 132rd death anniversary.

Rao who paid tribute at Phule’s statue at Amberpet said he had inspired scores of people like Dr B.R. Ambedkar, particularly from weaker sections of society, to get educated.

Phule’s emphasis that education was important for both men and women prompted his wife Savitribai Phule to strive for women's education, Hanumantha Rao said.

Lakshmaiah recalled the services of the reformer who instilled confidence and was the guiding force amongst the weaker sections. He lamented that despite 75 years of Independence the weaker sections are yet to get their due. He said the TRS government had not extended 12 per cent reservation to minorities and STs.
