Five teens drown in Kannur

Kannur: Five teenagers of a family, including a girl, drowned in Chamathachal river at Payyavur, Kannur, on Saturday. They were identified as Orija, 15, daughter of Salijan, Akkam Parambil, Tirur, Sreekantapuram;  her brother Safan, 7;  Ayal 7, son of Jose, who is the brother of Salijan;  Ayal’s brother Akhil, 14, and Manikk, 13, son of Jose’s sister.  His father is Binoy.

The son of Jose’s elder sister Manoja,  who was also with the others, survived. Police suspect that the children got trapped in the pits formed due to sand mining. The children went for swimming after they came to their ancestral house near the river.

 

Manikk Manoja’s son did not speak Malayalam and the locals heard his cries when his cousins drowned. Though the children were taken to a nearby private hospital, their lives  could not be saved.
