Youth washed away by waves near Vizhinjam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a second such incident in two years, waves washed away a young man while sitting on the rocks at Mathipuram near Vizhinjam bollard at 11.30 pm on Friday. Identified as Sanoop, 22, son of Gopalakrishnan of Shanthi Nivas, 12th mile, Arakkulam, Thodupuzha, he had just completed a video editing course from Keltron.

Two of his friends told police that he jumped past a safety fence along the rocks and walked on to the edge of boulders facing the sea. In spite of warning, he stood on the rock talking on mobile phone and was hit by waves. He fell into the rough sea below and went missing.

Two of his friends, Arun of Kanjikuzhy and Rishikesh of Kanhangad immediately alerted the coastal police. However, due to high waves, rescue efforts were not possible at night. The search operations started at 5 am on Saturday did not elicit result late night, and the search will continue on Sunday, coastal police said.

In May 2015, an Andhra Pradesh-based youth, Praveen, 28, who was working at Technopark washed away in a similar manner while clicking selfies on his mobile phone. A metal fence was put up here following the mishap.
