Case booked against corporate hospital staff for alleged medical negligence

HYDERABAD: Banjara Hills police have registered a case against a doctor and the staff working at the Jubilee Hills branch of a reputed corporate hospital chain on charges of alleged medical negligence resulting in the death of 86-year-old patient Narendra Prasad Das. The patient's family members have claimed that the administration of the wrong medication, coupled with the doctors' negligence, led to his deteriorating condition and eventual demise. Although Das passed away on April 11, his family filed a complaint on Sunday, prompting the police to register a case and initiate an investigation.

In his complaint, Das's son, Biswajit Das, stated that his father had been admitted to the hospital for respiratory complications. As his health improved, he was moved out of the ICU and transferred to the hospital's rehab centre. However, after being administered medication there, his breathing problems escalated.

Biswajit attempted to seek assistance from the nursing staff, but one of the nurses, a woman, disregarded his requests and remained engrossed in her mobile phone. When he insisted that she attend to his father, she scolded him, claiming that he was overreacting and refused to provide any care.

By the time help finally arrived, Das' condition had significantly deteriorated, with a drop in his oxygen levels. The attending doctor and nurses arrived late, and CPR was not initiated until the ambulance personnel arrived, approximately 10 minutes later. This delay resulted in Das experiencing hypoxia. He was subsequently transferred to the hospital's emergency unit, where he passed away while undergoing treatment.

Biswajit asserted that if the nurses had responded promptly or if the doctors had prescribed the correct dosage of medication, his father might still be alive.
The Banjara Hills police have seized all the relevant case files pertaining to the treatment provided and are currently in the process of collecting additional evidence. They have assured that the investigation will progress accordingly.
