KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode District Panchayat will soon start children's drama groups in high schools to promote theatre activism among students and also to expand anti- drug awareness campaigns. The groups will be named after K.T. Muhammed, the legendary Malayalam drama and film playwright from Malabar.

These groups will be responsible for conducting anti -drug awareness plays at schools and other institutions.  Theatre camps and performances will be held under the banner of these groups. Noted professional theatre groups will give training to students.  Speaking to DC, Kozhikode District Panchayat President Babu Parasserry said that the initiative aims at creating awareness among new generation about theatre and the rich heritage Malabar possess in the field.

“We have a rich heritage as far as theatre activism is concerned and K.T Muhammed is one of the prominent figures in the Malayalam drama who wrote many plays that have stood the test of time. The new generation should know about it and I hope this initiative would help them to understand the contributions made by people like KT on theatre field and for the social development in Malabar,” he said.

Babu Parasserry himself is a theatre artiste who had won several accolades including Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi award and state awards. The District Panchayat President hoped that the theatre activism would also help the students in personality development. “Getting involved in different areas of drama like acting, writing directing etc will help the students to see things from a different perspective and also help them to become a better human being,” he added.
