Kozhikode: A school near here has launched a scheme to inculcate the reading habit among the housewives.   The National Service Scheme volunteers of Subulussalam Higher Secondary School, Moorkanad,  have started to  provide them free books as part of this year’s reading week observance. This is meant to reduce  their addiction to soap operas and other social networking sites.

Books of fiction, general knowledge and  current affairs and  educative magazines were collected by the students from willing donors. “For the last few months, we have been on a mission to collect as many books as possible and later we distributed them among the housewives,”  said one of the NSS volunteers. “Many mothers of students studying in our school  spent most of their time watching television serials and  on mobile phones. Through this mission we will help them to  read more.  They can also educate their wards on the importance of reading,” the volunteer said.
