KOCHI: Dr Muneer, who contested the last Parliament elections as the CPM candidate in Lakshadweep and who was brutally assaulted by the police in the stand-off between residents of Minicoy and police on Thursday, was airlifted to Kochi for expert medical care on Sunday. He was immediately taken to a private hospital for investigations and treatment. It is understood that Dr Muneer is having difficulty in urinating.

He said that the administration agreed to airlift him after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan telephoned the Lakshadweep administration top officials including the Medical Director. The issue was brought to his attention by K.K. Ragesh MP. Dr Muneer said that around 15 youths too were assaulted by the police led by the SI Ameer Bin Muhammed after being picked from their homes and it was the worst reprisal on the island.

“I was assaulted by the SI even as I was being taken from the lockup to hospital. The doctor who attended us was also acting hand-in-glove with the SI and they all are trying to protect the sex scam accused Moosa,” Dr Muneer alleged. Dr Muneer said that the Lakshadweep administration is now deploying a DySP to probe the violent incidents the other day, but people of Minicoy won’t co-operate with it. “People have lost faith in the police and they want a judicial inquiry,” Dr Muneer added.
