KOCHI: From Wednesday, hundreds of auto rickshaws operating in Kochi city will boast of a Passenger Information system which will enable commuters to know the distance, fare and time taken for a particular trip among others. The initiative is part of the Kochi Metro initiative to bring public transport system under one umbrella.  The initiative is being introduced by Ernakulam District Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Union (AITUC) with the technical support of VehicleST, an IT startup firm. The innovative initiative will be launched on Wednesday by C. Divakaran MLA.

“Initially 120 autos will be included in the scheme and 600 more vehicles will be added in a phased manner. The app installed in autos will have many features to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers like a panic button. In case of an emergency situation or accident, passengers can contact the police and the call centre by pressing the panic button,” said Binu Varghese, secretary of the Union.
Several other features also have been included in the app to improve the auto service.

“The operation control centre and trade union leaders can monitor each vehicle and the approach of drivers to passengers. It is possible to make positive changes in the sector through strict monitoring,” he added. The Kochi Metro Rail Limited authorities earlier invited proposals from bus, auto rickshaw, taxi operators and representatives of various trade unions from the motor sector on improving the transport sector in Kochi. The KMRL authorities have agreed to extend the multi-purpose Kochi One smart card to auto rickshaws fitted with the app.  The Union is planning to bring 1000 autos under the system, once it is fully operational.
