Heavy rains have brought about a new found enthusiasm among farmers of drought hit Rayalaseema districts.

Thiruvananthapuram: A huge amount of usable clothes which were collected in Thiruvananthapuram, as part of the district administration's drive, have been sent along with waste to Tamil Nadu, according to the volunteers.

V. Mohanan Chalai, a PTA member at SMV Government Model Higher Secondary School, who was supporting the collection drive at the school, says that they had sorted out the best clothes, but even these were sent as rejects to Tamil Nadu.

"We had spent a lot of time sorting clothes. There were washed and ironed clothes, including thousands of saris in good condition.

Some of the set could be sent to some flood-affected areas, thanks to individuals who were travelling to other areas. But towards the end, there were 15 or 16 sacks full of sorted clothes.

Everything that remained in the school was sent to Kanakakunnu. There, revenue officials decided that the clothes would be sent to Tamil Nadu with the rejects. That was a painful sight," he says.
