WARANGAL: A Warangal court Wednesday gave the death sentence to accused, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, 24, a native of Daulatpur in Bihar, for the murder of nine people in Gorrekunta of Warangal Rural district on May 20 earlier this year.

The additional sessions court judge, K. Jaya Kumar, delivered the judgement after the public prosecutor, Satyanarayana, argued strongly before him that Yadav should be hanged as it was the appropriate punishment for a person like him.

The defendant pleaded guilty to murder before the judge. The police registered the accused under several sections, including 449, 328, 364, 380, 404, 302, 210 of the IPC and filed the chargesheet within 25 days. The judge tried about 100 people in the case.

During the night of May 20, Yadav sedated and drowned nine persons in an agriculture well on the premises of a warehouse.

He killed the family of Md. Maqsood who migrated to Warangal from West Bengal 20 years ago. He had an extra marital affair with Maqsood’s wife’s sister’s daughter, Rafika, who lives with her two children in Warangal. Sanjay, who promised to marry Rafika, moved around with her teenage daughter. Rafika questioned his behaviour and forced him to marry her immediately.

On the pretext of going with her to meet her family in West Bengal, he took Rafika on a train and threw her out of it, after strangulating her near Nidadavolu in Andhra Pradesh on March 11.

When Maqsood’s family questioned him about the whereabouts of Rafika, he decided to kill all of them. He mixed sleeping pills in the food during the birthday party of Maqsood’s three-year-old grandson. He carried the unconscious persons to the well one by one and threw them in.

Among those dead were Maqsood’s wife Nisha Alam, their children, Shadab Alam, Sohail Alam, Bushra Alam, her three-year-old son, an auto driver Shakeel and two Bihari migrant workers Shyam Kumar and Sriram.
