Ooty; The Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) is an important elephant corridor too, a rich area of bio-diversity and a hub of rare animals which needs to be conserved without any disturbance, asserted Mr.S.Jayachandran, joint secretary of the Tamil Nadu Green Movement (TNGM).
Explaining the importance of the STR and its ecological value, he said that there are about three elephant corridors located in the STR jurisdiction that helps elephants to migrate between the Western and Eastern Ghats.
"The significance of the elephant corridors and the need to conserve them should be understood by all. Any kind of disturbance to the elephant corridors will bring irreversible damage to the ecology and the elephant habitat in the jungles and lead eventually to an escalation of the man-elephant conflicts. In recent times, we have noticed how railway lines along the forest fringes have played havoc with the life of elephants," he explained.
He further explained that the STR jungles are the abode for rare wild animals such as the hyena and black buck, besides housing innumerable insects, reptiles and avian population. The STR has been maintained all these years with its pristine glory and ecology, he added.
