Malappuram most accident-prone
Kannur district has the distinction of having the lowest number of accidents.
MALAPPURAM: Malappuram district tops in grievous injuries and deaths on roads in Kerala. The latest report of the Union road transport and highways ministry on accidents in India in 2015 says the district witnessed 2,882 mishaps in which 367 peoples were dead, 3,264 injured and 332 survived with grievous injuries.
Kannur district has the distinction of having the lowest number of accidents. Only 67 deaths were reported from the district, while 796 people were injured and 65 survived with grievous injuries.
Kerala ranked the highest in the total number of persons grievously injured during the period. Out of 39,014 accidents in the state, 29,096 people were grievously wounded. Overspeeding has been the single most responsible factor for road accidents, killings and injuries on roads in the state.
Kerala is the 5th most accident-prone state in the country, according to the number of accidents, after bigger states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. Kerala comes 4th, with 8.7 percent (43,735) of the total number of the injured in the country.
The analysis of road accident data 2015 reveals that about 1,374 accidents and 400 deaths take place every day on Indian roads which further translates into 57 accidents and loss of 17 lives every hour in the country.
