Elephant calf dies biting the bullet
The pachyderm, aged around five, suffered serious injuries in its mouth after it bit the bomb kept by poachers for trapping wild boars
COIMBATORE: In yet another moving tragedy involving pachyderms in the vicinity of Coimbatore, a calf elephant, which bit a country bomb few days back, finally died on Friday, as it succumbed to the bite-injuries it had suffered.
The pachyderm, aged around five, suffered serious injuries in its mouth after it bit the bomb kept by poachers for trapping wild boars. Some tribal people noticed the injured elephant near Ponnuthu temple in Thudiyalur and informed the Forest department.
The Forest department personnel were helpless and could not treat the injured baby elephant as it was in the company of its mother. They strayed into a private brick chamber on Thursday night, where it died the next day.
A team of Forest officials led by Boluvampatti forest ranger C. Dinesh and veterinary doctor separated the calf from its mother by burning crackers and by deploying a Kumki elephant.
