WARANGAL: The Bhadrakali Lake bund suffered a breach on Saturday, inundating Pothana Nagar and Saraswathi Nagar colonies, which were still struggling to recover from the floods, in Hanamkonda.

The bund of the Kakatiya-era lake, which is spread over around 700 acres with a storage capacity of 150 mcft, breached for the first time at Pothana Nagar by about 15 metres following the heavy flood inflow into it.

The lake also caters to the needs of drinking water for Hanamkonda and Warangal cities. The locals alleged that the unscientific execution of tank bund works and the negligence by the municipal officials, who did not take any preventive steps in the wake of the excess amount of inflow, led to the breach of the bund, inundating the colonies downstream.

On the other hand, police arrested BJP spokesperson A. Rakesh Reddy and other party workers preventing them from taking part in the relief operations in the affected colonies. Rakesh Reddy questioned the police whether it was a crime to help the flood victims. The residents also faulted the police action.
