Hyderabad: Minister K.T. Rama Rao along with his Cabinet colleague Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Thursday laid the foundation stone for construction of retaining walls on Hussainsagar surplus nala under the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP).

In order to safeguard low-lying areas from inundation when the lake overflows, retaining walls are being built on either side of the nala between Kavadiguda bridge and the confluence point of Musi river, with a budget of Rs 68.40 crore.

Recalling the flooding due to incessant rains in October last year, Rao said the works will bring a permanent solution to the inundation problem. “The 12-km-long retaining wall will provide respite to residents of Nallakunta, Amberpet, Ashoknagar and Musheerabad. Against a total budget of Rs 858 crore, the first phase of SNDP will focus on areas prone to inundation,” he added.

An estimated Rs 633 crore is allotted for nala development works in GHMC limits, while around Rs 225 crore is allotted for works in other urban local bodies in the city. For the planned 12 km retaining wall, there exists a retaining wall for a length of around 3 km.

Under the first package for the nine-km wall, works will be carried out in three stages — Kavadiguda bridge to Gandhinagar, Gandhinagar to Ashoknagar, and Ashoknagar to Himayatnagar bridge – at a cost of Rs 33.15 crore. The second package, with a budget of Rs 35.25 crore, will be extended in five stages spanning Himayatnagar, Chikkadpally, Baghlingampally, Nallakunta, Golnaka and the confluence point of Musi river.

Srinivas Yadav said that the nala retaining walls will provide relief to the victims of inundation.
