Kannur: Compared to other districts, Kannur is effectively tackling the stray dog menace with a joint operation by the district panchayat, Corporation and other local civic bodies. In July 2016, Kannur district panchayat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bangalore-based Animal Rights Fund for the sterilisation of stray dogs in the district. The MoU aims at sterilising between 250-500 dogs on an average a month. A temporary sterilisation centre has been set up at Pappiniserry Grama Panchayat Veterinary Hospital for the project.

“At present Kannur is the best district in the state to implement effective Animal Birth Control projects. The stray dog menace is less compared to other districts here,” said Corporation Mayor E.P Latha. “The project is being implemented effectively so much so that we are actually facing a shortage of dogs for sterilization,” added district panchayat vice- president P.P Divya. The first phase of the project is being implemented at Kannur Corporation, Pappinissery, Mayyil and Azhikode where the stray dog menace is high. While the Corporation and District Panchayat are contributing Rs 10 lakh each, the grama panchayats are giving Rs two lakh each for the project.
