KARIMNAGAR: There is panic among people living within the Rekurthi area of Kothapalli mandal in Karimnagar district following movements of bears.

According to sub-inspector Yellaiah Goud, police noticed a bear crossing the road on Wednesday night on CCTV footage and alerted villagers and officials of the forest department. Villagers too are said to have observed a bear moving in the mango grove and some colonies of Rekurthi.

Incidentally, two weeks ago, two bears had been spotted wandering on the Satavahana University campus. University authorities had then declared holidays for two days and asked students not to venture out of their hostels in the night. It is suspected that the same bears may have moved to the Rekurthi area.

Officials of forest department are trying to track down the bear by tracing their footprints and installing CCTV cameras near two wells and a drinking water pond present in the area. Two cage traps have also been set up. The location of traps has also been changed based on the footprints of bears.

But the bears have not been trapped yet.
