Chennai: Eager parents and students thronged city colleges as admission counselling to arts and science courses commenced on Monday but on the first day seats under special category and B.Com course got filled up.

Many parents and students, who had participated in admission counselling, complained that the admission to the first shift got over within an hour. Sagayam from Thiruvotriyur came with his family for his daughter’s admission counselling to Quaid-E-Millath Government College for Women.

He said his daughter prefers morning shift as it would be easy to come from their place. But by the time they came to the college premises at 11 am the admission for morning shift was over.

Some other parents were not able to understand as to why the scheduled caste category was filling up so fast and other categories were not. Presidency College Principal T. Pramananda Perumal said on the first day they filled the seats under a special category like ex-service men quota, sports quota and differently abled.

“We also admitted some students in B.A. Tamil and English. On Tuesday, we have called students who have the cut-off from 800 to 601. Students will get admission in all courses,” he said.

Akhtar Begum, Princi-pal,   Queen Mary’s college said the admission counselling in their college will go on until June 7. “We filled seats under special category today. Visually impaired students mostly took B.A. Tamil and English.” This year the application sales in the arts and science courses have shot up as the demand for the science courses increased this year.
