Petition to CM Pinarayi Vijayan seeks own building for Kochi Cancer Centre
Centre currently functions in the payward building of Ernakulam Medical College.
KOCHI: Leaders of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Movement on Tuesday met the Chief Minister Mr Pinarayi Vijayan and handed over a memorandum demanding that the construction on the own building of Kochi Cancer Research Centre should be expedited and a full-time special officer be appointed for the centre in place of District Collector who is busy with his other duties. Currently the centre functions in the pay ward building of Ernakulam Government Medical College, converted to OP building for cancer victims.
The memorandum was handed over to the Chief Minister by Prof M.K. Sanu who is the patron of the movement during the event commemorating ‘panthibhojanam’ conducted by Sahodaran Ayyappan here. The memorandum said that the movement is happy for the government in including the cancer centre among top government projects. “Currently chemotherapy medicines are given for free at the centre and 7 specialists and other staff are giving committed service. However the DPR of the project is still not ready and its construction has also not started though KIIFB has accorded Rs 300 crore for the construction,” the memorandum noted.
It requested the Chief Minister to give directions to the health department to allow cancer centre to make use of the facilities at the adjoining medical college to the maximum in the initial stages the way RCC used that of the Thiruvananthapuram medical college in its initial phase. “This will help the students of the medical college also,” the memorandum signed also by Dr N.K. Sanil Kumar and N.V. Murali pointed out.
