Kellys home to get new building

Chennai: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said a new building at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore will be constructed for the Government Observation Home, housing juvenile offenders, at Kellys in the city.

Making a statement under Rule 110 in the State Assembly, she said Juvenile Homes provide temporary stay to children who acted against law and were not given bail.

She said while the government was presently running six such centres in Tamil Nadu and a NGO was taking care of one home. “The building housing the Juvenile Home at Kellys is damaged and hence a new 1,000 square metre building with all facilities will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore. It will have rooms, kitchen and dining hall, industrial training centre and class rooms,”
she said, adding, it would be equipped with all facilities to channelise the children in noble path.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the food subsidy being given to inmates of Senior Citizen Homes run by service organisations with government's funding will be increased from Rs 300 to Rs 1,200. She said the income ceiling to stay in the nine Government Service Centres in Chennai, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Salem, Sivaganga, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Perambalur and Krishnagiri districts has been fixed at Rs 24,000.

She said the income ceiling for beneficiaries of Sathyavani Muthu Ammaiyar Memorial Tailoring Machine and other schemes was increased to '72,000 a year from Rs 24,000.
