HYDERABAD: The BRS on Saturday alleged that the government had committed several serious irregularities in the floating of tenders for auctioning of rice stocks accumulated with rice millers, as well as for procurement of fine rice for the mid-day meal scheme. The party alleged that the government was set to lose Rs 330 crore as a result of the irregularities.

Former BRS MLA Peddireddy Sudarshan Reddy told reporters that the government had approved tenders at the rate of Rs 57 per kg for fine rice used for the mid-day meal scheme when the open market rate for this variety of rice was lower.

He alleged that the civil supplies department under the Congress government had witnessed scams totalling almost Rs 1,000 crore. The government was now seeking to extend the auction period for disposing of accumulated rice stocks by calling global tenders. By doing so, the government was seeking to ensure a cartel of businesspersons would benefit. “We will complain to the CBI on this,” Sudarshan Reddy said.
