VISHAKHAPATNAM: The low-pressure area over southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal has moved northeast wards and developed into a well-marked low-pressure area over west-central adjoining south Bay of Bengal on Thursday.

This system is expected to intensify by May 25 and is likely to approach coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal by Sunday evening as a severe cyclonic storm.

If the cyclone is formed, it will be named “Remal” as suggested by Oman. It will be the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season. As per the forecast, the cyclone spares the Andhra Pradesh coast this time.

IMD said the light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, over the coastal districts of West Bengal and the adjoining districts of Odisha on May 26 and May 27.

The weathermen forecast that light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, over Tripura, Mizoram and South Manipur on May 26 and 27.

IMD said conditions are becoming favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon over more parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Andaman Sea and some parts of the east-central Bay of Bengal during the next two days.

The current weather system (low pressure area) helped the monsoon advance in the country. The system may not have an impact on the onset of monsoon in Kerala.

Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds 30-40 kmph are expected at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on Friday, while heavy rain at isolated places over NCAP on Saturday and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places over remaining parts of the state on May 25.

IMD forecast that the thunderstorm activity will continue till May 27.
