New Delhi: India summoned Bangladesh deputy high commissioner Md. Nural Islam on Monday following Dhaka's summoning of Indian high commissioner Pranay Verma on Sunday over disputes related to border fencing activities.

India conveyed that its border security measures, including fencing, adhere to existing bilateral protocols and agreements between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). India also emphasised the need for a cooperative approach to combating cross-border crimes such as smuggling, trafficking, and criminal movements.

Bangladesh had alleged that India attempted unauthorised construction of fences at five locations along the border, including Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, and the Tin Bigha Corridor. Bangladeshi Home affairs adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury claimed the disputes stemmed from imbalanced agreements signed under the former government of Sheikh Hasina, which had left unresolved issues at 160 border sites.
