Visakhapatnam: The Indian Navy has proposed inviting President Draupadi Murmu as the chief guest for this year’s Navy Day celebrations on December 4, set to be held in Puri, Odisha. This mark the first time the Eastern Naval Command will host the event in Odisha. In 2022, President Murmu was the chief guest at the celebrations in Visakhapatnam.
To prepare for the event, the Navy conducted a preliminary hydrographic survey and drill at Puri beach in mid-August, overseen by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi. Five warships, including INS Jalashwa, INS Kiltan, and INS Sumedha, were stationed off the coast of Puri, offering the public a rare opportunity to witness naval vessels in the area.
Each year on December 4, Navy Day festivities commemorate India's victory in 'Operation Trident' during the 1971 war with Pakistan. The event in Puri will feature a variety of thrilling demonstrations, including high-speed runs by inshore support vessels, anti-submarine rocket firing, helicopter and aircraft displays, and amphibious exercises. The grand finale will include a stunning illumination of the ships. However, Vizagites will miss this annual event, considered the biggest in the city, which typically draws over a million people to the waterfront.
