Kerala cops suspended for partying at gangster’s house
Thiruvananthapuram: Amid increasing crime incidents in the state, the Kerala police on Monday suspended two cops who were found partying at the house of a gangster in Angamaly in Ernakulam district.
The cops along with their superior and Angamaly crime Branch DySP M G Sabu were found enjoying the hospitality of the gangster Thammanam Faisal at his house during a raid carried out by the police under Operation AAG (Action Against Goons). While DySP's driver and personnel from the Armed Reserve Camp were suspended, an inquiry is being conducted against the officer who reportedly hid in the washroom during the raid.
The DySP and other cops came to Faisal's house after their trip to Gudalur.
Thammanam Fiasal is one of the criminals against whom KAAPA (Kerala Anti Social Activities Prevention Act) was slapped in Kerala for the first time.
Operation AAG was launched by the police after a spike in crime cases in many parts of the state. The home department came under severe criticism for failing to rein in the criminal gangs who many believed were having a free run in the state.
After the suspension, the DySP and the cops resorted to the blame game. The DySP said he was brought to the criminal's house by his subordinates while the latter accused their superior officer of having links with the gangster.
Meanwhile, an internal probe has been launched by senior officers into the entire incident.
As part of Operation AAG, the police had carried out widespread raids at the houses and hideouts across the state. Interestingly it was as part of the operation AAG, that the police team arrived at the house of Thammanam Faisal.
The house had been under police surveillance for the past few days. Following this, the officials learned that a police jeep had reached the house. The DySP, two policemen and a police driver were at the house.
