Kerala: Elderly Man Killed in Bomb Blast in Kannur

Thiruvananthapuram: An elderly man was killed in a bomb blast in the Kannur district of Kerala on Tuesday.
The dead, identified as Velayudhan, 85, was collecting coconuts from an abandoned building near his house at Eranjoli in Thalassery when the explosion took place. He inadvertently picked up a steel bomb and tried to open it. His hands got severed by the impact of the blast. Velayudhan was rushed to the Thalassery Cooperative Hospital immediately after the incident but his life could not be saved.
Similar fatal incidents involving steel bombs and crude bombs in isolated areas have been reported in the Kannur district in the past as well.
In April this year, a CPM worker died in a bomb blast in Panoor in Kannur district. Another activist Vineesh was injured grievously when they were allegedly engaged in making a bomb on the terrace of a house.
A scrap dealer and his son, died in July last year in a bomb blast inside a rental house in Kasimukku in Mattannur in Kannur district. The victims were migrant workers from Assam. A steel bomb exploded while they were collecting scrap inside the house.
