Kerala Enforces Restrictions on 'Disaster Tourism' in Wayanad

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has implemented stringent restrictions on "disaster tourism" to deter non-essential visits to the disaster-stricken areas of Mundakkai and Chooralmala in the Wayanad district.

The government has expressed concern that the influx of unnecessary visitors is hindering relief efforts. PWD Minister Mohammad Riyaz stated that it is not necessary to bring food and clothing directly to the relief camps.

"People visiting the disaster site are disrupting the relief operations. There is a significant number of individuals visiting the location of the tragedy, entering abandoned homes to take pictures, and even arriving at the camps," said the minister.

Mohammad Riyaz stated that disaster tourism will be discouraged and strict controls will be implemented. The minister urged the public to avoid unnecessary visits to disaster-affected sites.

In the meantime, registration has been made compulsory for volunteers seeking to assist in the landslide-prone areas of Mundakkai and Chooralmala.

The Revenue Department's registration counter will operate near the Chooralmala control room starting at 6:30 am on Sunday. Entry into the disaster zone will be permitted only for those who have registered at this counter. Group volunteers must register the name and address of their team leader.
