Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH), Dr Sandip Ghosh, from the city on Friday for questioning in the case of rape and murder of an-duty young doctor during his tenure.

Dr Ghosh, who has been on leave after his transfer to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in the city in wake of the barbaric incident, had moved the Calcutta High Court for his security in the morning but did not get any relief instantly.

According to CBI sources, Dr Ghosh was sent summons many times after the probe started but he never responded. The last notice was served to him on Thursday. Sources claimed that a CBI team picked Dr Ghosh from Ruby crossing on the EM Bypass and took him to their office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake at around 3 pm.

The doctor was grilled there for seven hours along side two others, Dr Arunava Dutta Chowdhury, the head of the department of pulmonary medicine who took charge on August 1 at RGKMCH, and the RGKMCH former medical superintendent cum-vice-principal Dr Sanjay Vashisth.

Dr Dutta Chowdhury and Dr Vashisth were questioned for more than eight hours on Thursday also. Dr Ghosh, who is known for his proximity to ruling Trinamul Congress, came under fire for initially trying to pass the post graduate trainee’s death as suicide. He also earned allegations from the junior doctors of hospital mismanagement.
