Manipur: Tension in fringe areas of Imphal Valley after man goes missing

Tension was palpable on Tuesday in parts of the Imphal West district that borders Kangpokpi after a 55-year-old man belonging to the Meitei community remained missing for more than 24 hours.

Guwahati: The security forces on Tuesday launched a massive combing operations to rescue Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a resident of Loitang Khunou village in Imphal West, who left home on Monday afternoon to report for work at the Leimakhong Army Camp in Kangpokpi but went missing.

Informing that he has been missing since then, security sources said that tension has gripped the area as a report of a 55-year-old man belonging to the Meitei community remained missing for more than 24 hours, spread among the residents.
Pointing out that his mobile phone was also switched off, security sources said that security forces and army have launched a joint search operation to rescue the person.
Indicating that the army has pressed a helicopter to search the whereabouts of the missing person, security sources said that state police were also conducting search operations in vulnerable areas.
According to his family, Singh did menial jobs at the Leimakhong Army Camp, located 16 km away from the state capital and surrounded by Kuki-residents.
Meiteis who lived near Leimakhong have fled the area since the onset of the ethnic violence that has claimed over 250 lives since May last year.
Meanwhile, a large number of people from Singh’s village on the way to Leimakhong to know his whereabouts were stopped by security forces near Kanto Sabal to prevent an escalation of the situation, security sources said. After being stopped, the mob blocked the road with rocks, they said.
