Sonamarg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated his commitment to restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that "right things will happen at the right time." Speaking at a public event after inaugurating the strategically significant Sonamarg Tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, he assured that his promises would be fulfilled.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also attended the event, expressed optimism about the restoration of statehood, citing the Prime Minister's delivery on earlier promises, including holding assembly elections and bridging the "distances of hearts and from Delhi." Abdullah highlighted the smooth conduct of assembly elections, with record voter turnout and no irregularities, as a significant achievement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday pledged to make Jammu and Kashmir “even more beautiful and prosperous,” calling it the “crown of India” while inaugurating the 6.412-km Sonamarg Tunnel along the strategic Srinagar-Leh Highway. Built at a cost of ₹2,700 crore, this all-weather project is expected to boost tourism, enhance connectivity, and strengthen defense logistics to Ladakh.
Modi highlighted J&K’s new atmosphere of peace, saying it was pivotal to the region’s development. He noted a tenfold rise in tourist footfall over the past decade, adding that more than two crore people visited in 2024. Emphasising “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” he said the government aims to leave no region behind as India strives for developed-nation status by 2047.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to seven people, including a local doctor and construction workers killed in a terror attack at the tunnel’s start point in 2024, applauding their dedication. He also praised the revival of sports and cultural activities, citing international marathons and cricket tournaments in the Valley.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah commended Modi for improving connectivity and supporting development. With substantial road projects underway and investments flowing in, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that J&K’s future remains bright as India focuses on infrastructure and inclusive growth.
