Nagpur: Tragedy struck a family on Monday as a car ploughed into a group of people sleeping on a footpath in Nagpur leaving two dead and seven injured. The incident happened in the Dighori area in the city and the car was allegedly driven by an engineering student in inebriated condition.

The accident took place at around 12:40 am. Among those injured, four were identified as children. The family of the victims sells toys and lives on the footpath.
According to reports, six students (aged between 20-21), allegedly intoxicated were traveling in the car after a birthday party. The car lost control and took over a footpath killing two people. The driver also attempted to flee and moved the car back and forth.
Vijay Sagar, DCP Zone 4 Nagpur, confirmed 'drunk driving' in the accident. A case with relevant sections has been registered and an investigation is on, said the DCP.
Meanwhile, a local court had granted police custody of all those traveling in the car until June 19.
