Nandyal LS Segment Sends First Woman to Lok Sabha
Kurnool: Alliance candidate and Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari created history as she is the first woman ever elected from the parliamentary segment.
Shabari had contested Panyam in 2014 from the Rayalaseema Parirakshana Samithi but faced defeat. However, in the present elections, she secured a decisive victory with a massive majority of over 1.36 lakh votes.
The Nandyal LS has witnessed a scarcity of female candidates in its electoral history. The Constituency has had only one female contestant in its history until now. Bhuma Shoba Nagi Reddy who served as a legislator from Allagadda for four terms faced defeat when she contested the polls in 2004 for the LS segment. After 20 years, Shabari's victory created a record as she became the first woman MP from the constituency.
This parliamentary segment consists of seven assembly segments -- Nandyal, Dhone, Panyam, Allagadda, Srisailam, Banaganapalle, and the reserved SC constituency of Nandikotkur.
Many male candidates such as former President of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, and former Governor Pendekanti Venkata Subbaiah, had represented the constituency. Narasimha Rao's landslide victory in 1991 in Nandyal, with a record-breaking majority of 5 lakhs, earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
In recent times, Maddur Subba Reddy, Bojja Venkata Reddy, Gangula Prathapa Reddy, Bhuma Nagi Reddy, and SPY Reddy have been elected from there. However, there were only male contestants until Shabari's current victory.
