The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the the revised rank list for the medical entrance exam NEET-UG on Monday, officials said. The revised list was announced after a retest was held for 1,563 candidates who were initially awarded grace marks due to a delayed start at six exam centres on May 5.

The retest, conducted at seven centres on June 23 following a Supreme Court order, saw 48 per cent of the candidates not appearing. Out of the 1,563 candidates, 813 appeared for the retest, while the remaining candidates opted for the marks without the grace marks.

The controversy began when allegations arose that the grace marks had inflated scores, leading to six candidates from a single centre in Haryana achieving a perfect 720, along with 61 others. This led the Supreme Court to cancel the grace marks and offer a retest.

Meanwhile, students have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar, protesting against irregularities in NTA-conducted exams, including NEET-UG, NEET-PG, and UGC NET. The protest, now in its sixth day, has seen scores of students under the banner “India against NTA” demand a re-examination of NEET-UG for all candidates and a return to the old university-specific entrance exam system.

The students have also called for a march towards Parliament on Tuesday to press their demands, which include banning the NTA and the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. After a demonstration on Monday, the students called off their protest for the day but reiterated their demands.
