Karnataka govt to move Supreme Court on Cauvery
At a meeting convened by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, these leaders also decided to raise the issue in parliament.
BENGALURU: With leaders of all parties backing the move, the state government on Saturday decided against setting up of the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee in the Supreme Court, on Saturday.
At a meeting convened by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, these leaders also decided to raise the issue in parliament. "Our officials nominated by the state government will attend the meeting on July 2 and they will raise our issues and present our views to safeguard the interest of our state and the farmers," Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar told the media here, adding "Our Members of Parliament have been requested and they have agreed in one voice, cutting across party lines, to raise the issue (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha)."
He said the government has decided to appeal in the apex court with guidance from legal luminaries including Fali S Nariman and Mohan Katarki, and the advocate general.
"They will frame how and in what manner we approach the Supreme Court and in what context," he added
The meeting was convened to plan the state's next move after the Union government's decision to set up the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
Besides Mr Kumaraswamy, the meeting was attended by deputy chief minister Dr G Parameshwara, leader of the Opposition B S Yeddyurappa, Union minister D V Sadanada Gowda, ministers and several MPs and MLAs.
