CHENNAI: Terming as ‘historic’ the enactment of the triple talaq law, former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan said this paves way for the beginning of a transforming India.

Mr. Radhakrishnan asserted that the BJP-led government’s initiative would ensure gender justice and equality.

“There is no scope for breaking nuptial ties in the name of religion. End of Triple talaq. This is a holy day for all our Indian mothers in having complete freedom in marriage,” the former Union Minister tweeted.

Mr. Radhakrishnan’s ecstasy reflects the general feeling among the leaders and cadres of the BJP in the State, who nurse the hope that the initiative would help the saffron party gain proximity to the minority community.

On Wednesday, after the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent, thus making it a law. It was notified by the Union Law Ministry.

As per the law, which has several features to safeguard the affected women, it makes a cognizable offence if a man pronounces talaq. Apart from allowing the affected woman to drop her charges and allow the husband to go on her terms, it entitles the custody of the minor with the wife.

Though the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) welcomed the triple talaq saying it would protect the lives and honour of Muslim women, a section among the Muslim clergy are divided on the issue.

“Today is a historic day, Both the Houses have given justice to the Muslim women. This is the beginning of a transforming India.Great moment in India’s history for gender justice & equality. @narendramodi @AmitShah @rsprasad,” Mr. Radhakrishnan had tweeted.
