Hyderabad: Moral lessons in schools from next year

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday said that from the coming academic year, moral and ethical values will become part of the curriculum in educational institutions. He made the announcement while releasing an autobiography, Journey through Turbulent Times, by former director-general of police H.J. Dora at Pragati Bhavan.

Addressing retired bureaucrats and officials on the occasion, Mr Rao felt the education system should be such that it inculcates and enhances moral and ethical values while removing criminality. He said the process of creating a value-based society will start with academic lessons being prepared in consultation with former DGPs and spiritual teachers like the Jeeyar Swamy.

The CM observed, “Unfortunately, criminality is on the increase in present day society. In some incidents, humans are behaving like wild animals. There is an urgent need to stop spread of criminality. Moral values can be raised in the society only through offering value-based education to children.”

He said: “Our government is committed to move in this direction with dedication. We feel that from the coming academic year, value-based education should be taught in educational institutions across the state. We have to prepare lessons in this regard. We will appoint a committee with former DGPs. We will seek advice and suggestions from spiritual teachers like Sri Jeeyar Swamy and others.”

In a direct hint at the alleged encounter killing following the brutal rape and murder of Disha, Mr Rao pointed out: “There is nothing wrong in taking stringent action for the good of society. In larger interests of people in a democracy, the government has to sometimes take measures which the government itself is not inclined to. We have to take certain actions recognising the sentiments of people. If society at large is to benefit, certain stringent actions are necessary.”
