Kurnool: YSR Congress Chief Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has opened the Pandora’s box by announcing that he would rename Krishna district as NTR district if he comes to power in 2019 elections. The statement made by Mr Reddy to please the Kamma community has led to more such demands from other districts. Welcoming Mr Reddy’s announcement some sections in Anantapur district are demanding that their district should be renamed after the former President of India, late Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy.

Some other sections are demanding that Anantapur district should be renamed as Satya Sai district in which Puttaparti Prashanti Nilayam of Satya Saibaba is situated. In the same way there is a demand to rename the Kurnool district after former chief minister Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy. After Mr Reddy’s statement to rename the Krishna district as NTR district the Kurnool Reddy Association Secretary, Mr Birru Pratap Reddy demanded to rename Kurnool district as Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy district and Anantapur district as Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy district.

He also demanded that Srikakulam district should be renamed after TD leader and former Union Minister K. Yerrannaidu who died in a road mishap in 2012.

In fact, in practice no one calls Nellore district as Potti Sriramulu Nellore district and Kadapa district as YSR Kadapa district. The new names were confined to Government records only.

Meanwhile there is an opinion in the public that with the renaming of districts, foreign tourists, international agencies and others may get confused about the names. They are also of the opinion that dumping the old nameplates, signboards, official stationary and rubber stamps and creating new ones in place of them will lead to additional expenditure for the state exchequer.
