HYDERABAD: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi expressed the confidence that his party would win a sizeable number of seats in Gujarat Assembly elections, which are to be held on December 1 and 5. Owaisi said the MIM would reap the benefits while exposing the absence of governance under the BJP.

The party, which has identified 40 candidates, will finalise its list after Owaisi returns from a visit to the state.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Owaisi said that ‘mishandling’ the Covid-19 pandemic was the BJP government's biggest failure.

“Owing to a dearth of facilities in hospitals, many persons succumbed to Covid. Businesses reported sharp decline and salaries were slashed to unbelievable lows. We hope that the (party's) leadership represents minorities, Dalits and tribals and gives voice to them,” he said.

On the Morbi bridge tragedy, the MIM boss said it was an ‘unfortunate’ incident and blamed inept administration for the tragedy.

“The company which received the contract had no experience. The local municipal authorities had failed to issue fitness certificates before it was thrown open to the public,” he said.

Over continuous allegations of being a B-Team of BJP, Owaisi said that his party does not need anyone’s certificate.

“I call upon leaders of those political parties to decide and finalise what they wish to call us. Let them come to Ahmedabad river front and decide over snacks. This (name calling) will not change anything,” he added.
