About six months ago, the Centre issued a notification constituting a separate Wakf Board for Telangana.
The Hyderabad HC on September 12, 2016, had directed the Telangana government to constitute the management committee of the Wakf Board within three months after hearing a petition protesting the running of the Board by appointing a competent authority without holding elections. The three month period comes to an end on December 11, 2016. The board officials said they seek extension from the court after the CM’s approval.
According to officials of the Board, elections will be held to elect four members, one from the category of MPs, one from the MLAs and MLCs, and one or two members from the Mut-awallis and committees of mosques and dargahs in the state. The government will nominate five members.
