Chennai: The Bharatiya Janta Party on Saturday announced Karu Nagarajan as its nominee for the December 21 R. K Nagar Assembly bypoll bringing to close the party’s long and arduous search for a ‘suitable candidate.

Though the party had fielded popular Tamil film music composer Gangai Amaran for the R. K. Nagar bypoll (that was cancelled in April this year), he did not evince interest to seek party ticket this time, BJP sources said.

“Many wanted our party president Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan to contest and there were few other contenders besides Karu Nagarajan. Ultimately, the state unit recommended his name and it was approved by the party high command”,
a BJP senior leader said on Saturday.

Mr. Nagarajan who was in the AISMK party founded by actor-politician R. Sarath Kumar, had joined the BJP.  He unsuccessfully contested from the Mylapore constituency during the 2016 Assembly election.
