Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and six ministers in his Cabinet suffered shocking defeats in the Assembly elections. Rao himself lost to BJP’s Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy at Kamareddy but retained Gajwel.

Ramana Reddy created a record of sorts by defeating Rao and TPCC chief A. Revanth Reddy, who finished third in the race.

The ministers who lost were Allola Indrakaran Reddy, S. Niranjan Reddy, Koppula Eshwar, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, V. Srinivas Goud and Puvvada Ajay Kumar. Five of them were defeated by Congress candidates and the Indrakaren Reddy lost to the  BJP’s Aleti Maheshwar Reddy.

Congress candidates Yennam Srinivas Reddy defeated Srinivas Goud in Mahbubnagar, Tudi Megha Reddy trounced Niranjan Reddy in Wanaparthy. Eshwar lost to Adluri Laxman Rao (Congress) in Dharmapuri. Tummala Nagesawara Rao defeated Ajay Kumar in Khammam.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate and debutant, 26-year-old Mamidala Yashaswini trounced six-time MLA Errabello Dayakar Rao in Palakurthi. In fact, this was Dayakar Rao’s first electoral defeat in his three-decade career.

Several candidates sprang surprises by humbling their more fancied opponents.  In Korutla, BRS candidate K. Sanjay defeated BJP’s Dharmapuri Arvind by 10,305 votes.

In a big shocker for BJP's Etala Rajendar, he came a cropper in both Huzurabad and Gajwel.
