KASARGOD: The district administration in Kasargod has initiated several measures to woo voters to the polling booth. This is in the light of as many as two lakh voters desisted from exercising their franchise in the 2011 Assembly election in which the poll per cent was 76.29.
“We aim at bringing more people to polling stations this time,” said Kasargod district collector E. Devadasan. “A vigorous campaign is expected to make a good turnout.” A slew of programmes has been kick-started under the initiative named Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP). A sign wall is being put up at Kasargod collectorate, four taluk offices, municipalities, RDO office and other important government offices where public use to frequent.
“People can write their names on the sign wall apparently making a pledge that I will vote and ensure that my family members too cast theirs,” added Mr Devadasan.
Vehicle campaign, ‘Votu Vandi’ will roam around all the five constituencies in the district calling upon voters to take part in the democratic exercise. An essay competition through Facebook has been launched enabling public to write either in Malayalam or Kannada.
Poster exhibitions, speeches, marathon, college visit and street plays will also be conducted for the purpose. The district administration has set up special counters to perform a trial vote on electronic voting machine in all constituencies.
The demonstration facility will be available for a week at areas which marked poor turnout in the last election. The trial voting demonstration counter will also function at the venue of kite flying competition at Bekal beach on April 9 and 10. “Actor Kavya Madhavan will take part in the mass awareness rally to be conducted for the purpose,” said electoral registrar officer K. Sujatha.
