Bhopal: Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday made a scathing attack on the Congress, saying that the grand old party used weaker sections of the society for political purposes.

Mr Shah who made a whirlwind tour of Gwalior-Chambal of Madhya Pradesh, addressing four election meetings and staging a road show at various places in the region, said that Congress was never interested in the uplift of the poor and the underprivileged in the country.

“Congress has barely done anything for the development of the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other weaker sections of the country. The party has simply used them for political purpose”, he said.

He said that BJP always worked for the development of these sections of people and ensured that they got their due rights.

Mr Shah accused the Congress of creating hurdles in the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya for the last seven decades and said that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre had silently worked to ensure that a grand temple came up there.

On January 22 next year, the idol of Lord Ram was going to be consecrated in the Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said.

He cautioned people of Madhya Pradesh against Congress saying that the party would push the state back into the period of darkness if voted to power in the state in the ensuing assembly elections.

“When you go to the polling booth to cast your votes, remind yourself of the situation in the state during the Congress-rule during which people suffered due to bad roads, power and drinking water crisis”, he exhorted the gathering in the public meetings.

He said that Madhya Pradesh witnessed development after BJP came to power in 2003.

Mr Shah is scheduled to spend the night in Gwalior where he is scheduled to meet the party leaders and workers of Gwalior-Chambal region to review the preparations of the party for the November 17 assembly elections in the state.
